| Item Description | The "Foil-Stamped Tenugui" is crafted using golden aluminum foil dyed directly into the fabric. The foil does not peel off even after washing, making it practical for daily use. Because the gold never "falls off," it is regarded as a symbol of lasting prosperity and is considered highly auspicious. This makes it popular not only as a functional tenugui, but also as a decorative charm, a thoughtful souvenir, or a special gift. [Officially Licensed by Kōzan-ji Temple] This tenugui features the National Treasure "Chōjū-jinbutsu-giga" (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and Humans), often regarded as Japan's oldest manga. The design captures rabbits, frogs, and other lively creatures enjoying a grand feast. A flowing gradient expresses the entire sequence—from preparing for the banquet to drinking, reveling, and eventually collapsing in merriment. In Japan, sake was originally brewed as an offering to the gods. At festivals, people presented it to the deities, drank together, and, in states of intoxication, some even became possessed, delivering divine messages to others. Brewing and sharing sake was thus a sacred ritual, symbolizing communion with the divine. This tenugui embodies that spiritual and cultural tradition in a single piece of cloth. The reverse side of the fabric is plain for a refined finish. Notes - As this is a handmade product, slight variations in size may occur. - Due to the nature of the dye, some changes in color and slight bleeding may appear. Please enjoy these as part of the charm of hand-dyed items. - Colors may transfer if exposed to water, sweat, etc. Please wash separately. - When ironing, use a low temperature and place a cloth over the fabric. - Traditionally, both edges of a tenugui are left unfinished to allow faster drying and for hygiene purposes. With use and washing, the fabric naturally tightens, and any fraying will stop after a few millimeters. |
