Item Description | Chōjū-Jinbutsu-Giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals and People) This famous ink painting scroll is preserved at Kōzan-ji Temple in Mount Takao, Kyoto. It humorously depicts animals and people in satirical scenes that reflect the society of its time, and is often considered the origin of Japanese manga. Even after 800 years, the lively rabbits, monkeys, and frogs still seem to dash across the surface of the furoshiki, bringing the spirit of the past to life. Note: Kumodori refers to a traditional Japanese design pattern that expresses soft, flowing clouds using outlines and color. These cloud motifs are often adorned with plants and flowers, adding decorative beauty to the surrounding space. |
